As a Speech Language Pathologist, I have been using an iPad in my therapy lessons for several years now.  There are so many things I love about so many different apps, but there are times when I have said “I wish there was an app for that!”  This was one of those times ~ functional multisyllabic words.  Yes, there are a lot of multisyllabic words, but will my students really benefit from practicing a word like “apologetic”?  I really wanted something with touch cues that had a motor component along with the segmented syllables.

HOW THE IDEA FOR THE MULTISYLLABIC APP DEVELOPED:

Several years ago, I used to make something like this out of construction paper ~ I folded a piece of construction paper in half like a greeting card (horizontally) and pasted a picture of a multisyllabic word inside (for example, butterfly).  Then I would cut the top page of the construction paper into the syllable parts and write the syllables on each flap.  The child would lift each flap while saying the syllables and when they opened to see the picture, they would say the full word.  The students really loved this activity, and it was wonderful, except very time consuming, especially when I wanted to add new words.  So with this in mind, Emmy Chen of Abitalk and I came up with this great new app called Multisyllabic, which pretty much does what I described above and MORE.

First of all, there are TONS of functional words ~ a total of 350 words in categories of: People, Animals, Food, Transportation, Geography, US States.  There are 155 two-syllable words, 135 three-syllable words, and 60 4-syllable words.

The images are beautiful.

It teaches functional vocabulary words at the same time as the articulation practice because of the repetition needed to complete each task.

There is a sorting feature so you can choose beginning, middle, and ending phonemes to practice.

There are phrases and sentences for every word.

Sight words are incorporated by having repetitive phrases and sentences.

Check out this video on Youtube and see how awesome this app is!!
